Description

Set in a circus ring, this adaptation brings Dahl’s ideas to life and has the confidence to add something new. Bored with playing silly tricks on one another, the grotesque, satisfyingly revolting couple, Mr & Mrs Twit, turn their attentions to capturing and training a family of monkeys, the Muggle-wumps, for a circus act. The monkey’s cruel incarceration in a cage is avenged when the Birds, led by the Roly-Poly Bird, trick the Twits into believing the world has turned up-side-down. (The audience helps in the trick by pretending to be up-side-down!.)

“Roald Dahl created some truly revolting characters in his time, but surely few can compare with the noxiousness of Mr & Mrs Twit. This adaptation by David Wood was easily as gruesomely grotesque as Dahl could ever have intended. The show is a marvellous mix of singing, dancing, theatre, slapstick and audience participation.”

Description

The Theatre is located on the delightful Two Sisters Lawn in the award winning gardens of Hever Castle in Kent, adjacent to the legendary Anne Boleyn Walk – the Castle was originally the home of the Boleyn family. The lawn is surrounded by some delightful flower beds including the famous ‘long border’ and an abundance of ornamental trees; it also contains the picturesque Two Sisters pond (and grotto) and a magnificent Tulip Tree.

As well as being a visual delight, the setting provides a natural auditorium with easy access to the theatre car park and the lakeside for those who prefer to picnic in view of the lake. For the others, the lawn itself provides a convenient and relaxing spot for that preshow picnic.

Additional Information:
All evening performances start at 8pm unless otherwise stated.  The castle gates open at 6.30pm for pre theatre picnics.  Matinee performances start at 2.30pm and the gates open at 2pm.
