Description

THE POKER SESSION (A Kent Rep Production)
by Hugh Leonard

Saturday 21st – Saturday 28th August
matinee – Thurs 26th Aug
no performances on Mon 23rd & Tues 24th Aug

The Poker Session represents a contrast and a change of gear from Kent Rep's earlier contributions to this year's Festival and will appeal to those who enjoy a touch of suspense and mystery as well as the deft feel for comedy for which Hugh Leonard is well known.

The scene is the suburban home of young Billy Beavis, newly returned from hospital following a breakdown. The occasion is a reunion with other members of his family and his best friends, Des and Irene, to play a game of penny poker. The joker in the pack is a surprise guest, the flamboyant and outrageous Teddy, who befriended Billy in hospital and who is keen to use the occasion to explore the other guests' roles in Billy's breakdown. The resultant confrontation is both dramatic and very funny, as Teddy exposes the inevitable skeletons in the cupboard. But even as seemingly all is revealed, one important mystery remains - where is Des?

Description

The Theatre is located on the delightful Two Sisters Lawn in the award winning gardens of Hever Castle in Kent, adjacent to the legendary Anne Boleyn Walk – the Castle was originally the home of the Boleyn family. The lawn is surrounded by some delightful flower beds including the famous ‘long border’ and an abundance of ornamental trees; it also contains the picturesque Two Sisters pond (and grotto) and a magnificent Tulip Tree.

As well as being a visual delight, the setting provides a natural auditorium with easy access to the theatre car park and the lakeside for those who prefer to picnic in view of the lake. For the others, the lawn itself provides a convenient and relaxing spot for that preshow picnic.

Additional Information:
All evening performances start at 8pm unless otherwise stated.  The castle gates open at 6.30pm for pre theatre picnics.  Matinee performances start at 2.30pm and the gates open at 2pm.
